Chronic or recurrent traumatic events such as: frequent ruptures with primary attachment figures, or long term exposure to violence (physical, emotional, & spiritual) or abuse often changes the way individuals with these experiences view themselves and how they interact with the world around them.
Maybe you relate with the feeling of walking into a room and instantly noting the energy of the group, scanning for signs of contention. Feelings of shame and difficulty connecting with a consistent sense of identity or maintaining close relationships might feel central to your lived experience. Impacts of CPTSD can make it seem especially more difficult to regulate your emotions.
Part of recovery from Complex PTSD is understanding how your nervous system responds to stress, and then also relearning how to feel safe within your own body and also safety within relationships with others. I draw from training in EMDR, IFS, somatic and mindfulness therapies, and DBT. You will learn take home skills to help you feel centered during the real life situations when you need them.
